Cargo enters into a new world

British Airways PLC has started the first phase of operation at its $400-million World Cargocentre in Jan 1998. The phase involves the transhipment of intact cargo containers. Loose cargo will be added in late 1999 while air mail will be the final phse in early 2000. The company has adopted a gradual migration to introduce the new systems and integrate automated procedures. BA will also open a $4.8-million special handling facility for couriers and special freights in April 1998, and a $24-million perishables center in June 1999.

Madrid plans to be southern European hub
Article Abstract:
Centros Logisticos Aeroportuarios will operate the newly opened dedicated cargo center at Madrid Barajas in Spain. The Air Cargo Centre includes two dedicated cargo facilities which are operated by Iberia Cargo and Ogden Cargo. Centrol Logisticos will build a new terminal close to the new runway of the airport, and linked by a 6-km people-mover. The new terminal will be equipped with 80 gates and a satellite option.
