Carrefour et Ikea annonc s Moscou
Article Abstract:
In Russia, the mayor of Moscow supports a project for a 20,000 square metre shopping center with a supermarket with 1,000 to 1,500 square metres of sales space under Pushkin Square. Setec, the French engineering and design firm is the main contractor for the project and responsible for finding investors and retail chains. Ramstore is expected to open a second, 30,000 square metre shopping center in the north of the city in November 1998, and a third in the south of the city in May 1999. Carrefour will be the leading French retail chain in Moscow with two shopping centres by the end of 1999. Each of them contain a 12,000 square metre to 15,000 square metre hypermarkets. The first, 90,000 square metres, will be located near the Kourskaia railroad station and the second, 45,000 square metres, will be located on one of the principal avenues in the north-west of the city.

According to experts, now is the time to invest in Russia. There are several reasons give: the price of land and rentals is very attractive at present. The real estate market has dropped 30% in one month, and rentals have dropped 20% to 40%. The financial crisis from which Russia is suffering at present should benefit the strongest and most professional retail chains. According to the Healy & Baker firm, Russia's economy is expected to improve in January 1999, while the GFK firm predicts that eight to ten hypermarkets will be opened in Moscow by the end of 1999. While groups like Carrefour have chosen to postpone their projects due to the Russian crisis, others such as Ikea, the Swedish giant, are betting on the Russian market. Ikea has announced its intention of opening five shopping centres in Moscow.

La Redoute's US catalogue only offers womens' articles emphasising the French 'touch' of La Redoute's articles. The USA represents the first market for mail-order firms with a market estimated at US$ 100bn.
