StarNet, l'alternative/
Article Abstract:
StarNet will supply the small and medium companies and private people in Belgium with Internet and intranet services for a start. Services will be delivered through an optical fibre network but the way in which the new operator might by-pass Belgacom's network remains vague. The new operator, worth some BFr 1bn in capital for a start, should report a 500 staff within five years while offering its first services before 31 December 1998. The French telecoms operator France T l com controls 75% of StarNet compared to 25% for its Belgian colleague Telinfo. Subsequently, StarNet might actually compete with Belgacom through offering telephone services through the Internet.

Production domestique en baisse/
Article Abstract:
The assembly of commercial vehicles went up 7.2% in Belgium in 1997 while buses surged 41.4%, the Belgian automotive union (Febiac) reports. This would not prevent the total assembly output to fall 10.8% that year as a result of Renault closing its plant of Vilvorde in the Summer of 1997. Over 1.10mn vehicles were assembled in Belgium that year, of which 95.4% were exported especially to Germany which accounted for 27.5% of the export performance. Belgium remained the country with the highest car assembly output per inhabitant (108 units per 1,000) in 1997 world-wide.
