Carrefour's CEO sets revival plan as net profit falls

Carrefour S.A. of France posted a net profit fall by 16 percent to 1.44 billion Euros ($1.72 billion) in 2005 from 1.7 billion Euros in 2004. Downturn in profit was due to a charge of 372 million Euros to sell and reorganize department stores in foreign markets, particularly Mexico, Spain and Japan. The world's second largest retail giant is planning to increase market share in its home market and open more stores internationally.

Marks & Spencer posts big gains

Marks and Spencer PLC of the United Kingdom posted a 63 percent profit gain to 212.6 million Pounds ($371 million) for the first half of the year from 130.4 million Pounds a year earlier. Also, first half sales were up to 3.65 billion Pounds from 3.63 billion Pounds a year earlier. Although retail sales are down in the United Kingdom overall, the turnaround efforts of the British department store are creating gold.

Carrefour profit jumps 11 percent amid turnaround effort

Carrefour S.A. of France posted first half sales increases of 8.8 percent to 37.29 billion Euros ($47.76 billion) from 34.27 billion Euros. Shareprice is up by approximately 20 percent this year. The retailer is the second largest worldwide and has department stores in 29 countries.
