Cashing out?
Article Abstract:
Lippo Group is undergoing restructuring of its financial activities. The group ranks third among Indonesian conglomerates. Lippo Securities will buy 27% of Lippo Life, while Lippo Life will buy 40% of Bank Lippo. There are different opinions as to why the restructuring is being carried out. One theory is that Mochtar Riady, founder of Lippo, aims to be able to extract family assets. Another view is that political unrest in Indonesia has led the group to prepare to shift assets abroad. Shareholder approval is still needed for the restructuring plan.

Happy at home
Article Abstract:
The Lippo Group, although plagued by intrigue in international commerce, is ready to dominate the retail market in Indonesia. The Lippo Group has been criticized for contributions to President Bill Clinton's reelection campaign but this does not seem to affect the company's position in its home country. Moreover, the seeming financial strength of the company is questionable since there is speculation among investors that Lippo may be buying up its own shares and the firm's restructuring efforts may have failed to deliver the desired results.

Going nowhere: some Khmer refugees refuse to go home
Article Abstract:
Some residents of Khao-I-Dang, a UN sponsored refugee camp on the Thai border, have not registered for repatriation to Cambodia and hope to be resettled in a Western country with UN assistance. Fear of the Cambodian government, enormous aid provided by the UN in the refugee camp and the vision of Western prosperity, have all contributed to the reluctance of Khao-I-Dang residents' to return to Cambodia. However, tightening of immigration rules in western countries in 1992, has made immigration prospects dim.
