Casualty of war
Article Abstract:
The Romanian economy was contracting in 1997 and 1998, and has been hit by the conflict in Yugoslavia in 1999. The conflict could hamper the progress of economic reform, which was already slow. Around 70% of Romanian bank loans are non-performing. Romania is seeking to reform by allowing foreigners to buy Romanian banks and plans a restructuring of steel and coal industries. Planned reforms are not always implemented in Romania, but there is little options but to reform the economy.
