Caveat emptor
Article Abstract:
Italy should be able to benefit from privatization, due to the problems of inefficiency and state interference in large firms, but the problem is still continuing. Telecom Italia is one example where minority stockholders have been abused. The Italian government is also involved in Telecom Italia. Both Telecom Italia and the chemicals and energy conglomerate, ENI, have been affected by boardroom disputes. Meanwhile, Enel, a state electricity company, is to carry out a stock flotation. The Italian government appears to wish to influence a wide range of industries, and this is not seen as odd by those involved in Italian politics.
