Rendered surplus: idled by machines, workers go on strike
Article Abstract:
Workers at the Thai Durable Textile Co have launched a strike to protest the proposed replacement of 376 employees with automated machinery. The strike is also a test case to prevent such moves by other textile companies. The industry, which led the boom in Thailand's export economy, is now losing ground to neighboring Asian states whose labor costs are lower. Low-level members of Thailand's once floundering labor movement have become increasingly aware of their rights, and are providing formidable opposition to such cost cutting measures.

Strength sapped: ruling coalition faces new opposition challenge
Article Abstract:
The merger of five Thailand political parties in an effort to gain more sway in parliament may have backfired. The Social Action Party, which included 21 Ministers of Parliament merged with four smaller opposition parties. Four days later Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai led a move to dispatch the new coalition from the government and replace it with the Seritham Party. The Seritham Party is more to Chuan's liking, and has given him the stronger coalition he may need to retain his post.
