Chinese airline's application for license in Hong Kong ruffles Cathay's feathers

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.'s long-standing dominance of the lucrative Hong Kong market is being threatened by an upstart Chinese carrier, China National Aviation Corporation (Hong Kong) Ltd. The Chinese carrier, a subsidiary of China's aviation regulatory body, has applied for a license to operate from the colony. With the application, analysts believe that Beijing may be paving the way for other mainland carriers to enter the Hong Kong market.

New Burma carriers thrive
Article Abstract:
Two groups of Singaporean companies, in cooperation with the Burmese government, have established two new airlines in Myanmar. Myanmar Airways International was formed in Feb. 1993 while Air Mandalay was launched in Nov. 1994. Unlike the state-owned Myanmar Airways, the two new airlines offer excellent service on board several new aircraft. In addition, the aircraft are manned by experienced pilots from Australia, France, Singapore and Burma.

India rejects plan by Tata and SIA to start airline
Article Abstract:
The Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has rejected The Tata Group and Singapore Airlines' proposed $600-million airline joint venture. The aviation ministry explained that the country's aviation infrastructure is below par and already has ample airlines. The decision is expected to confuse investors who were being constantly assured by Indian officials that economic reforms will continue despite internal conflicts.
