Chinese ports nibble at Hong Kong's supremacy
Article Abstract:
The Port of Hong Kong posted growth of 6.9% for 1996 prompting authorities to speculate that the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty may cause Hong Kong to lose its profitability. Hong Kong's port is still at the top of the list of containerports but it is the first time in nine years that the port failed to post double-digit growth. Proponents argue that the smaller growth rate is due to the delay in the much needed expansion of the port.

Expanded ports to challenge Singapore cargo supremacy
Article Abstract:
Foreign investment in Malaysian port facilities by container shipping giants Maersk Sealand International and Hutchison Port Holdings Ltd. is expected to chip away at Singapore's cargo-handling dominance. Port operators in Johor Baru, Tanjung Pelepas and Westport, Malaysia hope that terminal charges (30% lower than Singapore's) and availability of acreage for expansion of facilities will lure shipping lines away from Singapore.
