RIBA united in fees fight
Article Abstract:
The Council of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) deplores the action of architects in offering or accepting low fees and warns that to do so may be a breach of the RIBA Code of Conduct. Seventy architectural practices have discussed low-fee bidding and were unaninous in expressing concern. The RIBA Council voted on a motion deploring low fees and agreeing that cut-price fees result in a cut-price service. A steering committee will look into the cost of good practice. It is also suggested that practices share information on the cost of architectural services.

BPF warns on use of RIBA contract
Article Abstract:
Members of the British Property Federation (BPF) have been advised to use great care in using the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) new contract SFA/92. The contract was launched in Jun 1992 to replace the 'Blue Book.' The BPF believes the contract is too complex for small developers and is unhappy about some of the clauses, particularly those relating to conditions of appointment and a clause that allows client or architect ot abandon a contract provided reasonable notice is given.

RIBA education role challenged
Article Abstract:
The RIBA faces extinction unless it boosts its annual spending on education to four times the current level of 416,000 pounds sterling, according to a report by the institute's education and professional development committee (EPDC). The report says that education is taken for granted by the RIBA, but that the RIBA would fade away if it did not control architectural education in the UK's polytechnics and universities.
