City of hypocrites
Article Abstract:
The European Commission of the European Union (EU) was set up to promote the interests of Europe as a whole and to foster European integration. There are 16,000 staff, who form most of the EU's civil service. Governments have tended to play an increasing role in formulating European policy, and this means that the commission's role has decreased. The European Parliament is elected, but there has been little public interest in the parliament, so it is possible to argue that greater national government involvement in policymaking is beneficial for democracy.

Wider still, and why
Article Abstract:
The planned enlargement of the European Union involves countries from eastern Europe that have been affected by Nazi and then Soviet control, and which wish to follow a European model of free markets and democracy. Changes will be needed if new members are to be taken on. The applicants also want a timetable, since they are asked to carry out reforms to become members, and the incentives to reform as undermined if there is uncertainty as to when they can become members. The recovery in EU economies should help in the process of enlargement.

My continent, right or wrong
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) has expanded, and is still undergoing a process of change. Germany has taken on a new role since reunification, and this has altered the balance of power with France. There has also been a shift in favor of developing a military consensus in Europe. European monetary union, the loss of power of the European Commission, and plans to expand toward the east have also affected the EU. Changes are likely as a result of this expansion, both within the EU and in terms of the EU's foreign policy.
