Company profiles: Alitalia
Article Abstract:
Alitalia, Italy's major national airline, is amidst a four-year restructuring program, which it launched in fiscal year end 1996 in an effort to prepare for privatization. Privatization is seen as an answer to the airline's growing financial and organizational problems arising from deregulation and inherent operational inefficiencies. For 1996, the carrier reported a pre-tax loss of L1,210 billion on turnover of L8,508 billion. The airline's travel agent subsidiary, Italiatour, registered a turnover of L66 billion in 1995, a 19% increase over the previous year.
