The European Community Commission is moving toward deregulation of Europe'scross-border telephone services market. The introduction of competition into the currently monopolistic and inefficient system will likely make available to Europeans the wide array of telecommunications services in use in the US.

In every European country except Britain basic telephone service is a state-run monopoly. That could soon change as Sir Leon Brittan, head of the European Community's competition directorate, hopes to enact telephone deregulation before he resigns at the end of the year.
