Competitive urban policy and the regeneration game
Article Abstract:
The UK government's approach to inner city decline and deprivation changed radically with the May 1991 introduction of the City Challenge initiative and the later Single Regeneration Budget. City Challenge introduced the competitive bidding in the allocation of urban policy grants. It involves local authorities working with community, voluntary and corporate bodies to propose neighbourhood redevelopment plans. Although some areas have benefitted from the initiative and have introduced new working practices, there is widespread disillusionment with the competitive bidding process.

The 1992 Presidential election and the prospects for urban America
Article Abstract:
Bill Clinton's victory in elections for US President is not likely to bring major changes in urban planning, partly because the US is now a suburban society. This means that backing for spending on urban renewal will be difficult to achieve. What is more likely to succeed is a redirection of programmes such as enterprise zones, affordable housing, and education initiatives, and giving these a more urban slant. Unless a move is made to ameliorate urban problems, including crime, the benefits of a wider economic recovery could be undermined.

Soviet influence on urban planning in Beijing, 1949-1991
Article Abstract:
Recent research indicates that urban planning methods common in the USSR were very influential on policies adopted for Beijing, China, in the period 1949-1991. There was active involvement of Soviet planners in Beijing's planning activities in 1949-1957, and considerable emphasis was placed on the relevance of experience in the USSR to China. However, elements of Maoism and Chinese feudalism still remained in approaches to urban planning, and the Soviet influence waned rapidly after 1991.
