Concrete industry takes Japanese lessons
Article Abstract:
A recent study tour by BCA/Britpave to Japan part-fund by the Department of Trade and Industry, examined cement and concrete technology, with the aim of translating and exploiting such innovations and developments for the UK market. A concrete track bed was developed by Japanese National Railways to reduce damage to the original conventional ballasted tracks of the Shinkansen rail line. This reduced vibration and noise and led to increased construction accuracy and lower routine maintenance. The Japanese have alsop adopted porous concrete for roads, to reduce noise and removal surface water and eliminate spray. The Japanese have also successfully developed self-compacting concrete.

British Telecom building structure earns its keep
Article Abstract:
The new regional office for British Telecom was designed by architect Corstorphine & Wright under an HGB construction design-and-build contract. The building is passively cooled using natural ventilation and its own structure. The high thermal mass of concrete acts as a thermal sink, and exposing the soffits eliminated the need for expensive suspended ceilings, and allows heat to be absorbed directly.
