Consortium pulls its E1.2 billion offer for VNU division

The consortium led by Moscow-based Independent Media has withdrawn its offer of Euro1.2 billion for VNU N.V.'s consumer-magazine division. The consortium charged that the Dutch publisher would not grant the consortium exclusivity to negotiate and had already indentified a preferred buyer.

Reed Elsevier disappoints; Wolters's net rises 18%

Reed Elsevier saw its share value fall following its disappointing yearly profit figures. The company also predicted that its earnings would probably remain low for the 1999 year. Wolters Kluwer NV, a rival of Reed, posted an 18% improvement in its net profits for 1998. Reed Elsevier reported 2.54 billion guilders ($1.26 billion) in pretax profits for 1998. In 1997, the company posted 2.63 billion guilders.
