Article Abstract:
Former Malaysian Finance Minister and successful businessman Daim Zainuddin, who now heads the Malaysian National Economic Action, must quickly overcome serious economic problems in the Malaysian business structure. Zainuddin successfully navigated the Malaysian economy through a recession in 1985 but the 1998 crisis is more serious. Zainuddin must restore the banking and financing industry, decide how much public help should be given to private corporations, and answer allegations about conflicts of interest.

Leighton Asia, one of Asia's largest broad-based construction contractors, has experienced steady, controlled growth in its core sectors. These are the reasons the company has won in two categories for 1997 in the International Business Asia awards. The categories were "best large Australian business activity in Asia" and "best Australian service activity in Asia."

Korea Inc turns the corner

The leadership of South Korean president Kim Dae Jung and the International Monetary Fund's $60 billion rescue package has given international investors renewed optimism. The restructuring of chaebols, or conglomerates, that dominate South Korea's business structure is expected to be difficult but will serve to increase competition and decrease protection.
