Ministry shake-out
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government announced in Mar 1998 that it would be reorganizing a number of ministries in an attempt to separate business from the regulatory functions of government. The plan includes the merging or elimination of 15 existing ministries and the creation of four new ministries. The prospect of change, and the possibility of plans failing, as they have in the past, is unsettling for foreign investors used to the situation where people were more influential than positions. Foreign firms are uncertain about new lines of authority and about whether promised contracts will go ahead.

One of ours: China softens Chiang Kaishek's image to hit Taiwan
Article Abstract:
There has been a slow re-evaluation of Chiang Kai-shek in China, with Beijing encouraging the quiet reassessment. His name was once synonymous with evil, and in movies, he was always depicted as violent and crude. Chiang retreated to Taiwan with his troops in 1949, and his has been loathed by many Taiwanese since 1947, when his troops killed tens of thousands of islanders opposed to KMT rule. The re-evaluation of Chiang has increased as Beijing has identified Taiwan's President Lee Teng-hui as a more formidable KMT enemy.
