Critical transition: US and China should refocus on long-term interests
Article Abstract:
Four experts exchange views on improving Sino-American relations. One view calls for stressing issues of prime importance such as the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Another view is that making China a full participant in the international community should be a US priority, while the third view is that the US should not underestimate the importance of constructive engagement with China. The fourth view is that good Sino-American relations depend on trust, which in turn requires the US to stop imposing its standards on China and to respect Chinese traditions.

Gatt lost: for now China has no place in the trade group
Article Abstract:
TheGATT is not admitting China into its list of members for now due to several reasons such as China's capability of going against GATT rules and standards, its bullish treatment of Hong Kong and the influence US's annual Most Favored Nation (MFN) list has on GATT. Ironically, it is precisely to stop the MFN hearings in Washington, however, that China wants to join GATT. But political observers believe that China should be admitted only after Taiwan has been longaccepted by GATT.

Between two giants
Article Abstract:
The trade dispute between China and the US is likely to be disadvantageous for Hong Kong as well. The dispute occurred as a result of the US Trade Representative's (USTR) report that US exports to China were facing consequential barriers because of China's trade practices. A reduction in Sino-US trade is likely to slow down Hong Kong's rate of economic growth because it plays an intermediary role in trade between the two countries.
