Cross-strait business slows
Article Abstract:
The Asian economic crisis and the slow growth of Taiwan's economy has affected its investment activity in China. New investments fell by 75% in Jan 1999 which is an accurate reflection of a decline in new projects. The slowdown in Taiwan's economy is worrying China because Taiwan is one of the mainland's biggest trading partners, having spent more than $30 billion in the past decade. Another reason for the decline in investments is the waning interest of Taiwanese investors in China, following a regional drop of currencies in the region.

Taiwan is turned off by Hong Kong model of democracy
Article Abstract:
Taiwan remains apprehensive of the "one country, two systems" policy of China despite evidence of movement to greater democracy. The Legislative Council elections of May 24 in Hong Kong may have exhibited signs of reform, however, the denial of a popularity vote for majority of the legislature may only strengthen Taiwan's resolve not to reunite with China. Taiwan has already made much progress in developing its own democratic system that it may be ultimately unwilling to give it up in favor of China's own version.

Getting ready for direct air and sea links with China
Article Abstract:
Taiwan will eventually establish direct sea and air routes to mainland China despite the current political crisis affecting the two countries. A ban on such direct transport routes has been in place since 1949 but with the return of Hong Kong to China, a breakthrough is being predicted in this matter. This prediction is not far-fetched since Taiwan is the leading investor in China and the latter is Taiwan's second biggest trading partner, next to the US.
