Article Abstract:
Hugo Chavez was elected president of Venezuela in part as part of a move against corruption, but he faces problems arising from allegations relating to campaign finance. Jesus Urdaneta, former head of state security, has compiled a dossier and presented 46 cases of corruption allegations to the public prosecutor to be investigated. Meanwhile, Chavez faces more of an electoral contest in May 2000 than he had expected, and has to organize the selection of candidates for the regime for several thousand offices.

Special investigations by magistrates into political corruption are increasing in number. Some feel that the judges are overstepping their power in some cases and legislation has been proposed to limit their power. The Socialists feel investigations of their party are politically motivated by the right.
