Czech metallurgy in 2000
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: The capacity of liquid steel production was 6 mil t in 2000. The volume of completed products sales was 5.2 mil t in 2000. The steel sector had a total of 43,200 employees in 2000 compared to 136,600 employees in 1989. The steel companies that have stakes held by the state are Nova hut (NH) (Czech Republic), Vitkovice (Czech Republic), Jaekl (Karvina, Czech Republic), Valcovna za studena (Czech Republic), Valcovny plechu (Frydek-Mistek, Czech Republic), Vysoke pece (Ostrava, Czech Republic). Private companies are Trinecke zelezarny (TZ) (Czech Republic) and another nine firms. NH, Vitkovice and TZ ensured 84% of the total turnover of the sector and employed 72% of all the employees of the metallurgy sector in 2000.

The salvation of globalization
Article Abstract:
VSZ (Kosice, Slovakia), metallurgy company, is getting out of a crisis in 2001, thanks to US Steel (Pittsburg, US). US Steel bought the bankrupt firm VSZ for USD 500 mil in 2000. USD 325 mil of the sum was represented by the taking over of VSZ's debts. US Steel promised to invest USD 700 mil in VSZ, which were renamed to US Steel Kosice (Slovakia) after the acquisition, and to keep jobs for the firm's 17,000 employees for the next 10 years. The firm's production should be extended to 4 mil t per year gradually compared to 3.3 mil t per year in 2000. VSZ is an important Slovak company with a 10-20% share in total Slovak exports and a 15% share in Slovak Gross Domestic Product.

Article Abstract:
Trinecke zelezarny (TZ) (Trinec, Czech Republic), metallurgy firm, could set up a consortium with the metallurgy division of Vitkovice (Czech Republic) and the metallurgy firm Nova hut (NH) (Czech Republic). TZ would be the leader of the consortium. This results from a study of the consultancy firm Eurostrategy (UK). The study was drawn up for the Ministry of the Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and was financed from the finances of the programme Phare of the European Union. According to preliminary results, TZ saw a profit of CEK 300 mil in 2000. Vitkovice saw a loss of CEK 9 bil in 2000. NH's loss amounted to CEK 644 mil in 2000.
