Judgement day
Article Abstract:
Econet is a mobile phone company which has been successful in Zimabwe, despite a number of obstacles. The company was set up by Strive Masiyiwa, who faced a monopoly held by the national phone company, PTC. He was forced to take legal action to ensure that he could set up his service. He challenged a license awarded to Telcel, a consortium that included the nephew of the president among its backers. His challenge was suucessful, and Econet held a 45% stake in the market two months after its service had been launched. The backing by the courts was important in ensuring Econet's success, when it was faced with cronyism.
