DEMAND GOBBLING UP PRODUCTION GAINS
Article Abstract:
Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board's (APSEB) installed power capacity has increased from 60 mw in 1956 to 7,308 mw in 1998. It has a customer base of one crore and supplies 38,000 million units per annum. Between 1974-75 and 1984-85, APSEB's power production capacity increased from 880 mw to 3,156 mw, registering a compounded annual growth rate of 13 percent. The industrial consumption was 6,509 million units per annum (MUPA) in 1986-87, which remained at 6,617 MUPA in 1989-90 and 7,000 MUPA during the past five years. The consumption by agricultural sector, however, has increased from 3,347 MUPA in 1986-87 to 8,720 MUPA in 1996-97. It is likely to go up to 9,100 MUPA in 1998-99. Andhra Pradesh has added 1,296 mw capacity in the Eighth Plan period (1992-93 to 1996-97). APSEB contributed 5,612 mw, joint sector (Vijjeswaram Gas Turbine Power Station) 272 mw, private sector 537 mw and State's share from central projects amounted to 887 mw. APSEB plans to add 15,000 mw capacity by end of 2002. Proposals to add 1,909 mw capacity has been planned through six power producers based on naphtha and furnace oil. Mini-hydel, cogeneration, biomass and bagasse based power projects from private sector will add another 500 mw capacity. (rk)(psr)

KARNATAKA TAKES GIANT LEAP IN POWER SECTOR
Article Abstract:

Of this, the Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) accounts for 3,318 mw, Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) 349 mw, Central grid 729 mw and private sector 84 mw. The government of Karnataka plans to raise power generation to 7,500 mw by 2000 AD to meet the requirement of power in the state. KEB has signed a pact with NGC of UK for a power transmission project. The project envisages power transmission from Mangalore to Bangalore and Mysore. Under the project, Rs800 crore worth evacuation line and stations will be installed. During 1994-95 to 1998-99 (till December) the state accounted for a total EHV (extra high voltage) of 4,898 CKMs (circuit kilometres) with 197 sub-stations. (gs)(m)
