FIAT ENTERS PRICE WAR, LINES UP CHEAPER UNO

Fiat Auto of Italy has entered the price war between Maruti Udyog Ltd and Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company in the Indian car market. It has entered the war through Ind Auto, its joint venture in India. Fiat Auto has launched 9 new low-price car models in India. The new models are to replace the Uno petrol and diesel versions. Fiat Auto has reduced the price of its petrol- driven car by Rs50,000 and that of its diesel version by Rs1 lakh. It has also upgraded its petrol version by installing a 1,000 cc engine. (ag/kvr)

MARUTI UNLEASHES BIGGEST AUTO PRICE WAR

Maruti Udyog Ltd (MUL) announced a reduction in the prices of its car models - Omni, Maruti 800 and Zen a few hours before Telco announced the prices for the Indica. MUL has slashed the price of the Maruti 800 by about 24,000 to Rs1.85 lakh from Rs2.09 lakh. The price of the diesel version of the Zen has been reduced by Rs36,808 and will now cost Rs4.26 lakh. The company says that its profits will go down due to the price cuts but it hopes to make this up through increase sales volumes. (khr)
