DENMARK: DFDS TO PLACE ORDER FOR CARGO VESSELS

DFDS, the shipping company, has placed an order for three new cargo vessels with Flensborg Vaerft shipping yard. According to DFDS managing director Ole Frie, the acquisition of the vessels is part of the company's strategy plan announced in January. He says the company will spend around DKr900mn (US$109mn) to buy the vessels. It also has an option for another five vessels. The new vessels are to replace DFDS's older vessels.

DENMARK: A NEW PROPELLER TO CUT OIL CONSUMPTION
Article Abstract:
Danish engineers have developed a new propeller for ships that can bring about a 4-7% savings in energy consumption for ships. According to estimates, shipping companies would be able to save some DKr14bn (US$1.7bn) provided that all merchant vessels in the world were equipped with such propellers. The propeller will undergo full-scale tests financed by D/S Norden and the EU.

DENMARK: APM SIGNS CONTRACT TO BUILD OIL TANKERS
Article Abstract:
A.P.Moller (APM) has signed a contract to build three oil tankers at Dalian Shipyard and Guangzhou Shipyard International in China, according to China Daily. This brings the number of shipbuilding contracts received by APM to 25 valued at more than US$750mn.
