SWEDEN: MERGER TO BE INVESTIGATED
Article Abstract:
Konkurrensverket, the Swedish Competition Authority, has started a thoroughgoing investigation of the merger between the Swedish dairy company Arla and Danish MD Foods. The investigation will focus on detailed information about the companies. Erik Sahlin at Konkurrensverket says the reason behind this is that the Swedish dairy market already before the merger is concentrated, and doesn't want to to exclude that the merger will be stopped. The paper comments that it's likely that the companies will have to sell off part of their activities.

DENMARK/SWEDEN: MD FOODS/ARLA CLOSE TO AGREEMENT
Article Abstract:
The management of MD Foods, the Danish dairy company, expects being able to present an agreement with Arla, the Swedish dairy company, already next week. The "merger-like co-operation agreement" will be the first of its kind; i.e. to unite co-operative societies in the dairy sector across borders in Europe. The agreement will have to be approved by representatives of the milk producers who own the companies, and possibly even by the European Commission.

DENMARK: SKANEMEJERIER INTERESTED IN DENMARK
Article Abstract:
Swedish dairy company Skanemejerier is highly interested in the Danish market and will first of all focus on speciality products, functional foods, says Skanemejerier's managing director Rolf Bjerndell. There are no plans for a takeover of Skanemejerier by Swedish Arla Foods which is operating on both sides of the Oresund strait. There are no other merger plans either, says Bjaerndell who expects the company to be able to cope on its own by focusing on speciality milk, fruit and vegetable products. According to Bjaerndell, Skanemejerier is not going to start operations in Denmark. A physical presence in Denmark is not necessary for selling to major chains. Torben Laursen of the Danish grocery chain FBD believes that Skanemejerier has good prospects of carving out a good market for itself within speciality products such as yoghurt in Denmark. Laursen says this is more difficult as regards milk and refers to the Swedish and Danish preference for domestically produced milk.
