DENMARK: TETRA PAK HOYER EXPANDS IN CHINA
Article Abstract:
The Danish company Tetra Pak Hoyer, which is the biggest producer of machinery for ice-cream producers in the world, has been negatively affected by the crises in Russia and Asia, as well as by overcapacity in Europe. For 1998, the company reported a DKr 14.5mn (USD 2mn) net loss, and turnover decreased to DKr 579mn from DKr 588mn in 1997. However, there are positive signs such as increased consumption of ice-cream globally and expansion on the Chinese market. In China, Tetra Pak Hoyer established an assembly plant in 1997 in co-operation with the local company Shanghai Light Industry Equipment Corp. The production is focused on machinery for minor ice-cream producers, and there are many such producers in China.

US: ARLA'S SWEETENER PRODUCTION NOT APPROVED
Article Abstract:
Swedish-Danish dairy company Arla Foods finds it difficult to persuade the US authorities about mass production of a new patented low-calorie sweetening agent Tagatose, which is natural sugar found in certain berries and cow milk. Arla's US partner, Biospherics Inc., whose brainchild Tagatose is, will now leave for Denmark in order to sort out the problems. Its shareholders are critical of Arla as it has apparently been negligent with its application for approval. Arla business development manager Kristian Eriknauer rejects criticism by Biospheric saying that it has no reason to prolong the process.
