DENMARK:ON GENETIC ENGINEERING AND BIO-TECHNOLOGY
Article Abstract:
The Danish Agricultural Council's annual meeting this year dealt with issues concerning food quality and the use of genetic engineering in food production. The Council states that it is important to demystify the problems in this area and to provide objective information about the matter. The Council claims that genetic engineering will make food products better and more wholesome. According to Peter Gaemelke, president of the Agricultural Council, genetic engineering could be used in food production in order to boost food quality. Bent Claudi Lassen, vice president of the Agricultural Council as well as MD of Danske Slagterier, a slaughterhouse company, maintains that the quality of food products could be raised further by using genetic engineering and bio-technology. Bent Claudi Lassen says that a break-through in the use of genetic engineering in food production will not take place until in 3-4 years time at the earliest. Peter Gaemelke also says he is satisfied with the Danish food safety and says Denmark internationally tops the league in this respect.

DENMARK:CONSOLIDATION IN BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY
Article Abstract:
The Danish biotechnology industry is facing consolidation as part of the natural process of maturity in the business. NeuroSearch's take-over of Display Systems Biotech is expected to be followed by a wave of transactions involving biotechnology companies, writes the paper. According to Leif Helth Jensen, who heads the newly-established biotechnology company Cureon, a large number of biotechnology companies have been established in Denmark lately, which means that not all of them can get the capital they need and will either be merged or bought by other companies.
