Dairy products in Germany, Part 3: Cheese
Article Abstract:
The cheese market in Germany is expected to continue to grow at a modest amount, although speciality and innovative products are particularly popular and will help to boost total sales. Packaged cheeses make up about two-thirds of total cheese sales, whereas service counter sales are declining in number. The average amount of cheese eaten per person in Germany has risen to over 18 kg, with soft cheeses representing 20% of this figure. International imports of 400,000 tons are near to the 500,000 tons shown for exports.

Health foods in Germany
Article Abstract:
The German market for natural health foods has enjoyed strong growth, although growth has slowed to 10-15% a year in the early 1990s vs 20% a year in the early 1980s. The total market is an estimated 3-4 million deutschmarks a year, with Bioladen, or specialist organic food shops, accounting for 1 billion deutschmarks. However, the total market is difficult to assess, since much organic fresh produce is sold via direct farm sales and market stalls.
