Deafening silence
Article Abstract:
Karaoke inventor Daisuke Inoue labors in near-total obscurity on other ventures while the machine he never patented wins converts worldwide and has half of Japan's citizens singing along. He gained popularity as a drummer and keyboardist in Kobe in the early 1970s when, in a local fad, the audience would sing along as a musician played. He built his music company, Crescent, into a Karaoke leasing firm, then left it in 1992, first to launch a nationwide karaoke association and then to teach dog owners how to train their pets.

Tight fit
Article Abstract:
Japanese underwear maker Wacoal had an unexpected hit in 1994 with its Body Balance Wear, upholsetered underpants fulfilling a similar function to a woman's girdle. The item's strong sales despite a relatively high price testify to Japanese male desire for tight buttocks and, given the number of relatively trim customers, insecurity. Wearers say the items are remarkably comfortable thanks to Wacoal's skillful use of spandex. The history of undergarments in Japan is briefly recounted.

It's good for you: Japan's drug makers face a harsh new world
Article Abstract:
Drug makers in Japan are facing a harsh, competitive new world, with many having to merge, which will mean a change of attitude amongst conservative drug executives, or face collapse. Those that survive will be innovators, and they will require higher exports and will have to meet stricter world quality standards. Japanese drug makers will find it difficult to compete with the large Western rivals.
