Denmark: Arla's strategy for tagatose launch criticized
Article Abstract:
Arla Foods, the Swedish-Danish dairy giant, is to decide by Christmas whether it is to start the production of its new whey-based sweetener tagatose. Arla's plans entail a small-scale production abroad at the initial stage. If the product proves successful large-scale production will be launched in Denmark. Arla Foods has a exclusive world-wide rights to produce and market tagatose, the low-calorie sweetener that tastes like sugar and can replace sugar in a large number of foods including breakfast products, soft-drinks and chocolate. Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Kellogg's and Kraft Foods are among potential users of Arla Foods' tagatose. Arla Foods deputy chairman Knud Erik Jensen declines to give any details but says it expects to establish a number of partnerships regarding the production and sale of tagatose. According to Borsen's sources, Danisco would be an obvious partner for Arla Foods. Arla Foods has been criticised by its US co-operation partner Spherix that claims Arla Foods has been far too slow to launch tagatose. Knud Erik Jensen says Arla Foods wants to have all the necessary approvals before starting large-scale production.

Denmark: Arla Foods' US partner critical of Arla
Article Abstract:
The Danish- Swedish dairy giant Arla Foods' US partner, Spherix, in the development of the milk-based sweetener tagatose is critical of the sluggishness Arla has shown in conjunction with promoting the product. Spherix MD Gilbert V. Levin says he had expected Arla to start production of tagatose immediately following the US authorities' approval of the sweetener on 11 April this year. He is highly surprised that Arla is still talking about small-scale tests regarding tagatose production. He says the delay will cost both companies millions in lost turnover and profit. Spherix is now looking at the legal prospects of canceling its contract with Arla.
