Denmark: Export has dropped

After the attack on Sept 11 the Danish export has dropped according to figures by the Danish Trade Council Eksportradet. Export of goods dropped by 9.6% in September compared to 2000, to a value of DKr35.6bn(US4.2bn). Import decreased by 7.5% in the same period to a value of DKr29.6bn. Export of goods and services is expected to drop from this year's predicted 4.4% to 1.2% in 2002, these figures are however expected to rise again to 4.1% for 2003 and 4.2% for 2004. Export to the US is estimated at DKr22bn for 2001. Oil export dropped by 37% in September and by 4.4% for the first nine months of the year. The good figures for the first four months of 2001 and the increased export to eastern Europe improves the figures for the export year as a whole that turns out rather good according to Borsen newspaper.

For the first time in eight years Denmark shows a trade deficit for a 12-month period. According to Statistics Denmark the deficit for the last year amounts to 1.4 billion DKr (US$ 204 million). The first four months shows a deficit of 3.9 billion DKr, compared to a surplus of 5.5 billion for the corresponding period 1997. It is especially the Danish export to Japan that has dropped. Also the export to the rest of Asia has declined.
