Denmark: OTC medicine sales up 17.9%
Article Abstract:
The deregulation of OTC medicine sales in Denmark on 1st October 2001 has resulted in a 17.9% rise in sales in October 2001 compared with the same month in 2000. This has not affected pharmacies' sales of pain-killers and nicotine replacements - on the contrary they have boosted their turnover by 2%. Grocery retail chains such as Dansk Supermarked, Brugsen and Matas report OTC medicine sales of around DKr10mn (US$1.2mn) in October out of total sales of DKr77mn. Dansk Supermarked says the chain's sales of OTC medicines was twice as high as planned. Nicotine treatments accounted for more than half of sales. Paul Bundgaard, head of the Danish Pharmaceutical Association, says the negative aspect of the deregulation is that the sales of pain-killers have risen.
