Denmark:DSB faced with tighter competition from coaches
Article Abstract:
DSB, the Danish rail company, will be faced with tighter competition on some of its more profitable routes following the Danish Minister of Communications' efforts to clear up the complicated rules for the operation of coaches. The minister says the operation of coaches is to be deregulated so as to give consumers a bigger choice of services. The minister does not intend to thwart competition through his latest proposals but DSB will get compensation from the state for some of its operations. Last year, 500,000 consumers opted for coaches instead of DSB. The price of a coach ticket is about 60% of the price of a DSB ticket. The minister will put further pressure on DSB with his plans to contract out another 10% of regional train operations in the next few years.

Denmark: DSB's rail service bid unrealistic?
Article Abstract:
Flemming Hansen, the Conservative communications minister in Denmark has postponed the decision regarding the winning bid for the Vestjylland rail services. DSB, the Danish rail operators, has submitted the cheapest bid; it would run the services at only 50% of the present cost. The second cheapest bid was submitted by British Arriva and the third cheapest by Deutsche Bahn of Germany. Serco Rail of the UK and Connex of France also submitted a bid but they have already been dropped from the bidding contest. According to a some sources, DSB's bid is based on exaggerated expectations for a positive development for passenger numbers.
