Designing in the Task Force spirit
Article Abstract:
An extensive urban regeneration project at Bilston, UK, offers an illustration of development which is in accordance with the Urban Task Force's recommendations. The designer of the project is architect Andrew Wright who also contributed to the Task Force recommendations. Previous uses of the 65 hectare site near Wolverhampton include coal mining and heavy industry but the site is now derelict and has been used for land fill. Plans for the site include commercial development along the main route with mixed residential use of the area alongside the canal which will be cleaned and restored.

'Brownfield' housing sites get new political impetus
Article Abstract:
Extra pressure has been placed on UK house builders to find building sites, after initial new housing requirement figures for 1991 to 2016 rose to 5 million homes from 4.4 million in Jan 1998. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott gave his approval for 10,000 new homes to be built on a greenfield site in Hertfordshire, and suggested taxing greenfield developments, with money raised going to inner-city rejuvenation projects. Demand for rural housing has increased while large areas of industrial waste land lay unused.
