Despite turmoil, foreign investors flock to the islands
Article Abstract:
Philippine President Fidel Ramos' persuasive demeanor is helping the economy attact a constantly increasing number of foreign investors even as many of the Asian nations are reeling from the region's economic crisis. Foreign investments reached 234 bil pesos, or $5.82 bil, for new plants, equipment and infrastructure in 1997, a 95% hike versus 1996's level. The influx of foreign investment provided a protection against the falling Philippine peso. However, vehicle sales fell 15% in 1997 and a further 20% drop is seen in 1998.

But wait - there's more: Asia is poised for further growth, economists say
Article Abstract:
Asia is on the verge of another economic boom, with an average economic growth rate of 7.3% annually in 1996 and 1997. With inflation rates declining and export growth predicted to recover in 1997, most of the region's economies will show robust growth until 2000, if not at the rapid rate of the past several years. These were the consensus of economists meeting in Manila, Philippines recently for the annual Economic Outlook Workshop sponsored by the Asian Development Bank to discuss the prospects for Asian economies.

However, concerns have also been raised over the macro-economic management in rapidly-growing Southeast Asian nations.
