Developing an expert support system for tender enquiry evaluation: a case study
Article Abstract:
Expert support systems can be used to assess whether or not to make a bid for a competitive tender, when the cost of making this bid is high, and can shed new light on management decisions, as well as improving efficiency in the decision making process. The history of previous bids was analyzed, and a repertory grid was used to give maps which illustrated the way key factors were interlinked. Following feedback from the management concerned, rules were built up, aided by statistical analysis of data from the grids.

Insufficient supply in a natural gas distribution system: a risk analysis
Article Abstract:
A stochastic computerised model has been developed to assess the risk of fuel shortages for a compay distributing natural gas in Canada, and has helped to develop policies on purchasing outside supplies where needed, to supplement existing stock, and on selective supply interruption decisions. The risk analysis in this case study was a requirement by Canadian regulatory authorities, and covered both the domestic and industrial markets during the winter period.

Multicriterion issues in energy policymaking
Article Abstract:
Multiple criteria methods can be used to help formulate decisions in the field of energy resources, including assessment of risks involved in different alternatives. A trade-off is found between preference for a particular course of action, and the practicalities of implementing it, and illustrating this balance between desirability and practicality helps provide a framework for making effective decisions.
