Didn't Delliver
Article Abstract:
Dell Computer saw a rise in sales of 38% for 4th qtr 1998, a slower rise in sales than the company had previously enjoyed. The company has also seen a drop in its world market share from a peak of some 9% in mid 1998. Dell builds to order and focuses on direct sales, and its methods can be copied by competitors. Dell has to decide on whether to enter the cheaper end of the market, which is very competitive, and whether to enter the Internet-access device market. There are questions about the ability of Dell's lean R and D department to respond to industry shifts.

Nice but dull
Article Abstract:
Hewlett Packard has announced plans to break itself up, with the test and measurement operations to be spun off. The president and chairman, Lew Platt, is to leave and an outsider could be appointed in his place. The company aims to offer its own 'e-services' over the longer term, and to boost sales over the shorter term. Hewlett Packard is hoping that its servers will perform well. The company also has to show that it can compete in the printer and PC markets.
