Differing views aired over urbanism's building blocks
Article Abstract:
An efficient, pleasant urban setting can be created by using 'walkable environments, according to Peter Katz, head of the New Urbanism group. This is similar to the UK's Urban Villages Forum, which aims to bring elements of modern urban and suburban life together in small communities which are efficiently linked with larger regional developments. This view is not shared by Terry Farrell, who believes that each city has its own specific characteristics, and that there is therefore no standard 'building block' for the ideal village or neighbourhood.
