GM and the law
Article Abstract:
A damages award against General Motors by a jury in California is surprising due to the large sum involved, $4.9 billion. This sum could be reduced after an appeal, but there is still a case for tort reform. An engineer has calculated that it would cost more to deal with problems arising from the location of the fuel tank than it would to pay damages related to deaths resulting from this problem. This could deter companies from carrying out cost-benefit analyses.
