Liberals up
Article Abstract:
The Free Democrats achieved almost 8% of the vote in elections in Schleswig Holstein, Germany, in Feb 2000, and they could increase their share of the vote to 10% due to the problems of the Christian Democrats. They have been in partnerships with both Social Democrats and Christian Democrats, which has allowed them to be in government for 45 years of the 51-year life of the federal republic of Germany. They could move toward the Social Democrats, especially since the Social Democrats have moved more toward the center.

Do the liberals matter?
Article Abstract:
The German Free Democrats' general secretary, Guido Westerwelle, has criticised Chancellor Helmut Kohl, although the Free Democrats have allied with the Christian Social Union and Christian Democrats. Westerwelle is preparing his party for a period in opposition, since the Christian Democrats are performing poorly in the opinion polls. The Social Democrats could ally with the Greens, or with the Christian Democrats, leaving the Free Democrats outside government. Yet Westerwelle expects a coalition of either type to collapse, which could lead to a coalition beween the Free Democrats and Social Democrats.
