Donor doubts: spotlight hits Asian-American political contributions
Article Abstract:
Asian-American community groups say that the financial contributions made by their members to political parties in the US are being unfairly singled-out for scrutiny. They say that press reports fail to distinguish between Asia-American and illegal Asian sources of funding. Investigations into their activities have been prompted by illegal Indonesian funding to the Democratic Party. Because of their weak voting strength, with just 1.2 million Asian-American voters being registered, Asian-Americans have traditionally turned to party funding to exert influence.

West meets east
Article Abstract:
Gary Locke, the Democratic candidate for governor of Washington state, is sensitive to issues which are of concern to Asian-Americans, as he is himself the son of Chinese immigrants. However, he is careful not to place too much emphasis on racial matters, especially as Asians account for only 6% of the state's population. His advisers believe that it would do no harm to emphasize the values of Asian culture, such as a firm commitment to education, which would appeal to voters of all backgrounds.

Backlash bill
Article Abstract:
Asian-Americans were able to link with other immigrant groups to reduce the scope of some of the main provisions of an immigration-reform bill which became law in the US on Sep 30, 1996. However, they are aware that there will inevitably be further conflict on immigration issues. They claim that there are unfounded fears in the white community that the Anglo-centric culture of the US will come under threat if immigration levels are not cut.
