Double happiness, anyone? Entrepreneur takes Philippine cigars upscale
Article Abstract:
Charles Alcorn III's Splendid Seed Tobacco Inc. hopes to carve out a name for itself in the premium cigar market in the US with its Philippine-made brands. The 34-year-old entrepreneur revived cigar making in the Philippines, which he claims has the expertise, the capacity and the tobacco to produce excellent cigars, but lacked the marketing skills to promote products overseas. He acquired Manila Cigar Inc.'s factory, commissioned an old tobacco artwork designer from North Carolina and had boxes handmade from local hardwoods by the best Filipino wood craftsmen from the province of Pampanga.

How GEC-Marconi's deal unraveled in Manila is a lesson for foreign firms seeking contracts
Article Abstract:
GEC-Marconi Ltd. had clinched a $133 million contract to supply the Philippines with a new state-of-the-art radar system, only to see the deal collapse due to political rivalry, bureaucratic infighting and the company's own miscalculations. Foreign companies are still eager to participate in the Philippine market for airport equipment but many observers believe that the whole incident has further tarnished the country's image as a place to do business.
