Dow Chemical to acquire Union Carbide

Dow Chemical Co. has reached an agreement to acquire Union Carbide Corp. for $8.89 billion (8.32 billion euros). The acquisition price comes out to $63.70 per share. The deal will make Dow a major challenger to DuPont in the US chemical market. The transaction is scheduled to be concluded by the early part of the year 2000. The two firms will have yearly sales worth approximately $24 billion.
