Easing Brazil's pensions burden
Article Abstract:
Rising life expectancy, early retirement, and pensions for rural workers who have not paid contributions, are among the reasons for Brazil's problems in funding pensions. A deficit appeared in 1997, and the government's attempts to follow prudent fiscal policies are undermined by spending on pensions. There has been opposition to pensions reform, but a Supreme Court judegement of Mar 15 2000 means that reform is more likely. There will still be a need for additional reforms, and to tackle the problem of unpaid contributions.

Pensions funk
Article Abstract:
France uses a 'pay as you go' pensions system, whereby retired people's pensions are paid for by those in work. and this is under pressure as the proportion of retired people increases. There are ideological obstacles to changing the system, as well as political obstacles, since prime minister, Lionel Jospin, wants to become president. Some changes will be necessary, and higher contributions and lower payments are likely. Jospin has not been brave enough to tackle the problem.

Low returns, happy returns: international investment if in fashion. Should governments limit pension funds' holdings of foreign assets?
Article Abstract:
Most pension funds would benefit from some holdings in foreign securities. Funds in developed nations gain diversification and better returns, while funds in developing nations get diversification and stability, but smaller returns. Most pension funds are already weighted towards the home country.
