East Timor tries to pick up the pieces
Article Abstract:
East Timor is newly independent, and faces serious problems such as lack of housing, electricity, and food. Around $300 million is needed to develop the economy over a three-year period, according to the World Bank. The United Nations (UN) has set up an administration, but there are fears that economic development may be difficult to foster. Cambodia, which was in a similar position, tended to become dependent on aid, though smuggling and other international crimes flourished. East Timor is in a good position for smuggling.
