Anticipating the birth of the American Economic Area (AEA)
Article Abstract:
The establishment of a common market for the Americas is being eagerly awaited by the US and Latin American countries. Trade initiatives such as the 'Enterprise for the Americas' of the US and the various trade blocs formed by Latin American countries are being touted as the answer to the Western Hemisphere's ailing trade markets. The regional free trade scheme is expected to encourage greater investments that will primarily benefit Latin America and facilitate debt reduction in the region. The success of the common market will depend on the lowering of cost structures to world levels and the stabilization of real exchange rates.

Article Abstract:
Small and medium-sized UK firms are failing to address two major issues concerning their computer systems. One survey has revealed that 77% of UK businesses are not prepared for the year 2000 transition problem, and that 26% of small firms have no view at all on the issue. Many companies are also failing to prepare their accounting systems to handle accounts in euros after the advent of the European Monetary System in Jan 1999. One company which offers a software package for both these problems is Main Control, and Tarlo Lyons is offering advice on legal liability and the Year 2000 problem.
