Economic recovery in Japan? Not so fast...
Article Abstract:
The emerging Japanese optimism concerning its economy is ill-founded. The government, intent on providing the people with the security that they demand, has opted to slow down in implementing much needed economic reforms. The Japanese value job security and social harmony over financial growth such that they view the economic and political stasis positively. However, this unsatisfactory state of things is bound to be scrutinized in the autumn 1999 political party elections and summer 1999 national elections.

...Unless tax barriers are dropped
Article Abstract:
The revival of Japan's economy needs concrete government support in the form of tax cuts. The country's economic decline started in the mid-1980s just as it increasingly imposed higher taxes. The initiative to lower taxes is expected to reverse the decline in the economy. Business enterprises will have more breathing space to forge beneficial deals with the consumers. The tax cuts combined with stabilization of the currency will pull the country from its economic rut.
